The Beatles and the Maharishi: A Spiritual Sojourn from February to April 1967

In early 1967, the Beatles embarked on one of the most curious and transformative chapters of their career: a journey to Rishikesh, India, to study Transcendental Meditation under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. From February to April, the Fab Four immersed themselves in spiritual practice at the Maharishi’s ashram on the banks of the Ganges River, a retreat that promised peace, inspiration, and a break from the chaos of fame.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr arrived with hope and curiosity, along with their partners and a host of celebrity guests. The retreat offered a rare pause in their whirlwind lives, with days filled with meditation, reflection, and songwriting. Indeed, many songs that would later appear on The White Album were conceived during this peaceful, if brief, idyll.
But by April, the mood had shifted. Allegations surfaced—later disputed—of inappropriate behavior by the Maharishi. Lennon, increasingly skeptical, made the decision to leave the ashram abruptly. His disillusionment echoed in the biting lyrics of “Sexy Sadie,” originally titled “Maharishi.” Only George, the most spiritually devoted of the group, remained somewhat sympathetic.
More than five decades later, the story was revisited in The Beatles and India, a 2021 documentary released in May. It explores not just the band’s stay in Rishikesh, but the broader influence of Indian music and philosophy on their art. With rare footage and interviews, the film sheds light on a pivotal moment that blended pop culture, spiritual searching, and cultural exchange.
Though the retreat ended in disillusionment, its impact on the Beatles’ music—and their individual paths—was profound. The Rishikesh chapter remains a fascinating intersection of celebrity, spirituality, and creative rebirth.
